Greater Chicago Food Depository Lent 2018

The Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Saint Andrew Parish is a proud support through parish volunteers of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This agency distributed nearly 72 million pounds of food last year including fresh produce, dairy products, protein and shelf-stable food to the more than 812,000 men, women and children in our community. That is one in six people in Cook County that needs help and 1 in 5 children that are food insecure. More than 23,000 volunteers come together during the year helping to make an impact on the fight against hunger. This number replaces 49 full time employees. A savings that contributes to the overall success of the program.

Each month on a Saturday morning we spend three hours working on a variety of projects to get food ready to be distributed.  Some months we repack huge bins of rice or beans into three-pound bags, sort through food drive donations checking for expirations dates or check fresh produce to make sure it is ready to be eaten.  On Monday morning, the food that we have bagged and boxed is loaded onto trucks and distributed to the 700 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Cook County. Locally St. Mary’s at the Lake and The Lakeview Pantry are recipients that help our less fortunate neighbors close to home. The impact that 3 short hours makes is overwhelming. Our last session on February 3 we helped pack enough food to feed 43,964 people.

St. Andrew’s volunteers year round at the Food Depository. Watch the bulletin for upcoming dates and join us for a very rewarding and fun volunteer experience. You can see the results of your work immediately. Each session is a new adventure to meet like-minded people coming together to help others.

The next volunteer opportunity at the Greater Chicago Food Depository with Saint Andrew Parish will be on Saturday, March 3, 2018 or April 14, 2018 from 8:30am to 11:15am. Contact Nancy Holland at 301-996-7737 or to join the group.
