Saint Andrew Gymnasium was built under the administration of Bishop Bernard J. Shiel who believed that: “the right of children to play is the inalienable right of childhood, but their recreation should be wholesome and supervised.” Bishop Shiel founded the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and constructed the gym on the northeast corner of Paulina and Addison. With a seating capacity of 3000, the gym became the long time home for CYO and Golden Gloves boxing tournaments. Many hold fond childhood memories of skate nights, carnivals and basketball at Saint Andrew Gymnasium.Today, the gymnasium is used for school lunchtime, pep rallies, assemblies, physical education and after school athletics. On any given Sunday afternoon during winter, the gymnasium is packed with youngsters playing Biddy Basketball. Community members also rent the gym for sports leagues, benefits, and other functions.
Saint Andrew Athletic Association is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the gymnasium as well as coordinating the Master Schedule and authorizing gymnasium use by outside entities. All of its activities and general expenses are funded through program fees, fundraising events and rental of the facilities for sporting events. This includes volleyball leagues 3 times a week from 7:15PM to 11:15PM, Golden Gloves Boxing 9 days a year and various Martial Arts events throughout the school year.
