CommunicationEmergency Procedures Emergency information forms are distributed to each family on contract signing days. Please supply the emergency phone numbers and adult contacts requested and return in to the school the first day of school. Please indicate any medical problems your child might have on this form. We ask you to also inform your child’s teacher of these medical problems. Parent/Guardian Memo Stay tuned: The Parent/Guardian Memo will soon be available on the website. The principal publishes a regular Parent/Guardian Memo to make announcements, share good news and congratulations, inform parents/guardians of special events, make changes in the school calendar, and to address issues of concern to parents/guardians. The memo is sent home on most Wednesdays in a large white envelope. Please ask for it from your oldest child attending St. Andrew School. The large, white envelope must be signed each week and returned to school on Thursday. Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences for Grades K-8 are scheduled for every student's parent/guardian during the first marking period of the school year. This conference is mandatory and the exact date will be announced. Throughout the year, informal conferences can be held as necessary to discuss your child's academic progress or behavioral record. Please contact the school office or your child's teacher to arrange a date and time. Problems, Grievance Procedures If a problem or difference of opinion arises between a student's parent and teacher, the matter should be discussed in a parent-teacher conference. Since a problem usually involves the student, a second meeting with the student, parent, and teacher is usually recommended to discuss the resolution of the problem. The assistant principal is available to act as a mediator for the parties only after the previous conferences have proven unsatisfactory. Neither the parish priests, nor the St. Andrew School Board are grievance committees. Open discussion with the parties involved is the best way to handle a problem. Class Lists & Communication Teachers receive a class list for each grade, consisting of family names, addresses, and phone numbers. Class lists are considered confidential. Addresses and phone numbers are not shared with students or families without their prior consent. When necessary, teachers may contact parents/guardians at home to discuss concerns. If you must speak to a teacher during school hours, please call the school office and ask to leave a voice message. The teacher will contact you at his/her earliest opportunity. Before and after school hours, press 1 to get into the school’s voice message system and then dial the teacher’s 3-digit code to leave a voice message. You may also contact the teacher through e-mail. Please see the back cover of the handbook for the faculty’s voice and homework mailboxes and e-mail addresses. Use of School Phone Students are encouraged to be responsible. One of these responsibilities is to bring all necessary items to school (gym shoes, lunches, school supplies, books and homework). Phone calls will be allowed in an emergency situation only and at the discretion of Mr. Percival, Mr. Ackermann or Mrs. Mahadeo. Middle school students are not allowed to call home for forgotten homework assignments. Field Trip Policy Field trips are a privilege afforded to students. No student has an absolute right to a field trip. Students may be denied participation if they fail to meet academic and/ or behavioral requirements. Included in the handbook is a copy of the field trip permission slip we use. If your child forgets to bring home the field trip permission slip, you can copy the exact wording from the sample, sign it and return it to your child’s teacher. No other permission form or letter will be accepted. Telephone calls will not be accepted in lieu of the proper form. Students who fail to submit the proper field trip permission form will not be allowed to participate in the field trip. Parents have the right to refuse to allow their child to participate in a field trip. |
