Literacy Center

The Saint Andrew Literacy Center is where students have the opportunity to make joyful and interesting encounters with literature. This year we are going to look at what makes reading enjoyable for all of us.

All students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade make weekly visits to the Literacy Center to hear stories read aloud, respond to stories in a variety of ways (writing, drawing, group-directed organizing and summarizing of details, etc.), and, of course, check-out books for their own reading. Students in grades 1 through 5 check out books on a weekly basis, and the Center is also available to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students for either research or recreational reading.

The Literacy Center features an “Author of the Month” and every grade level does at least one activity based on the work of this author. New books are frequently added to our collection and our “New Arrivals” book baskets are a very popular stop during student “book browsing” time.
